Wirral Conservation Volunteers and pupils of the Woodchurch High School, financially supported by the Wirral Society, held a hedgelaying and tree-planting day in Woodchurch Road, Birkenhead, in November.

This hedgerow is especially important as it provides a strong boundary between a suburban part of the North Wirral and the Green Belt.

Hedgelaying is a historic method of reinvigorating a leggy hedgerow, making it more stockproof. CPRE campaigns for the protection and improvement of hedgerows as they provide vital wildlife corridors as well as a host of other functions - if you would like to find out more, download ‘a little rough guide around the hedges’ via the link below.

This hedgelaying and planting event, organised by Paul Loughnane of the Wirral Conservation Volunteers, marks the official start of a four-year project. A wild pear tree was also planted to mark 90 years since the founding of the Wirral Society.
