CPRE Cheshire's popular Celebration of Christmas in words and music took place on Thursday 5th December, at St. Mary's Church, Rostherne.

We were delighted that so many people decided to celebrate Christmas with us this year. With popular carols interspersed with readings, seasonal music for piano trio, and organ music, followed by tea and cakes, and a talk about the history of the Church from Rev. John Whitehead, the afternoon flew by.

St Mary's Church lies between the village of Rostherne and Rostherne Mere and is recorded in the National Heritage List for England as a designated Grade I listed building. The church has many interesting features including the freestanding memorial to Charlotte Lucy Beatrix Egerton who drowned in Rostherne Mere on the eve of her wedding in 1845. It is by Richard Westmacott Jr. and depicts Charlotte lying on her side with an angel stooping over her.

We hope to return to St. Mary's next year.

Many thanks to all those who supported us today, as well as;

Rev. Philip Robinson, vicar at St. Mary's

Our President, Lord Grey of Codnor, for his reading and address

All those who came forward to do a reading (Our Chairman Andrew Needham, Val Moore Dutton, Peter Evans, Cassa Townsend and Lord Grey)

Our musicians: Violinist Robert Anderson, Pianist David Taylor and Cellist Peter Raynes, as well as Organist Robin Coulthard

And of course, Reverend John Whitehead, who was the driving force behind the event.

Lastly, many thanks to the volunteers who helped out by setting up the church, directing cars and people, serving tea and coffee, and clearing up and washing up at the end!
